Shooting a series of short videos to promote Alameda Theatre Company’s upcoming production of “Chile Con Carne” was a family affair; my daughter Emma features as the little girl in each of the spots & the play is produced and directed by my wife Marilo.
Chile Con Carne is about an eight year old girl struggling to adapt to life in Vancouver having arrived with her parents from Chile, political refugees from the military coup of 1973. The spots are designed to capture a sense of the story of play rather than record a moment from the play itself.
For the first spot we wanted a Barbie doll in full military dress – a version of Tanya, Che Guevara’a legendary compatriot. You can buy extra outfits for Barbie but apparently not military fatigues (or anything else practical). Thanks to Ebay and the market for 20th century ephemera, we were able to track down an authentic GI Joe outfit from the 1970s that worked perfectly.
